Butyl reclaimed rubber is processed from waste butyl inner tubes and retains the basic properties of butyl rubber, such as good air tightness, heat resistance, aging resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, low cost, and good processing performance. When used together with virgin rubber, it can effectively reduce the raw material cost of rubber products and save processing energy. Chlorinated polyethylene rubber has excellent oil resistance, flame resistance, heat resistance, ozone resistance, weather resistance, and color stability, and can be mixed with butyl reclaimed rubber in an appropriate ratio.

1. The significance of using butyl reclaimed rubber with chlorinated polyethylene rubber

Butyl reclaimed rubber and chlorinated polyethylene rubber are compatible and can be blended evenly. Using them together preserves the core performance advantages while enhancing the overall performance of the rubber blend, improving processing, and lowering raw material costs. The specific advantages are:

(1) Extending the service life of rubber products: Combining butyl reclaimed rubber with chlorinated polyethylene rubber improves the aging resistance of the blended material.

(2) Improving rubber processing: Butyl reclaimed rubber and chlorinated polyethylene flow well when heated, maintain excellent stiffness at room temperature, have low expansion during extrusion molding, and produce semi-finished surfaces that are dense and uniform, which reduces the difficulty of extrusion and calendaring processes.

(3) Reducing raw material costs: Compared with virgin butyl rubber, butyl reclaimed rubber is cheaper, easier to process, and consumes less mixing energy. Chlorinated polyethylene rubber has high filler capacity, allowing the blend to accommodate more reinforcing fillers, further reducing formulation costs without significantly compromising core properties.

2. Precautions for using butyl reclaimed rubber/chlorinated polyethylene rubber blends

(1) Control the blend ratio

When producing rubber products with a combination of butyl reclaimed rubber and chlorinated polyethylene rubber, the ratio should be determined according to the specific performance requirements of the product. When adjusting the proportion of butyl reclaimed rubber, focus on measuring Mooney viscosity, scorch time, optimum vulcanization time, and tensile properties.

(2) Adjust vulcanization process

The vulcanization speed varies with the amount of butyl reclaimed rubber in the blend. Since butyl reclaimed rubber retains some vulcanization components and has a certain crosslinked structure, the scorch time and optimum vulcanization time generally shorten as the proportion of butyl reclaimed rubber increases. Therefore, t10 and t90 should be re-measured using a rotorless vulcameter, and the vulcanization process should be determined based on product thickness, equipment temperature, and vulcanizing medium. During continuous extrusion and calendaring, pay attention to rubber residence time to prevent premature vulcanization, which can cause dimensional fluctuations or surface defects.

Butyl reclaimed rubber/chlorinated polyethylene rubber blends offer excellent aging resistance, weather resistance, oil resistance, and certain flame-retardant properties, making them ideal for producing rubber waterproof membranes. However, if the rubber product requires high air tightness, strength, low-temperature performance, or dynamic fatigue resistance, simply increasing the proportion of butyl reclaimed rubber to reduce costs is not sufficient. When purchasing, pay attention to the physical properties and batch stability of the butyl reclaimed rubber. The optimal blend ratio should be determined using both vulcanization curves and final product properties for different proportions.
